How to Sort Beans by Color and Visible Defects in Mexico

  The best bean-sorting result does not begin with a machine setting. It begins with a clear description of the beans you want to pack, the defects your buyer rejects and the amount of good product you are prepared to lose.

  Short answer: clean and size the beans first, present them in a stable single layer, use optical inspection to classify visible color, shape and surface differences, then verify both accepted quality and good-bean carryover from the reject outlet.

  Start with the commercial grade, not a generic “bad bean” setting

  Black beans, pinto beans, white kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils do not share the same acceptable appearance. A lighter bean may be a defect in one lot and normal variation in another. Before configuring a bean color sorter in Mexico, put actual accepted and rejected samples on the table and agree on the boundary.

  Define the bean variety, crop origin, moisture condition, size grade and final market. If two customers buy different visual grades, keep separate programs and reference samples.
