Open-Shell Pistachios: Inspect the Opening and the Exterior

For an open-shell product, the sorter may first need to confirm that the shell opening meets the processor’s definition. A narrow natural opening, a mechanically damaged shell and a fully closed shell should not automatically be treated as the same category. Representative boundary samples are essential.

The same inspection can be configured to remove visibly stained, dark, broken or otherwise off-standard shells when their exterior differs from the accepted product. Because pistachios arrive in varied orientations, a feature visible from one side may be hidden from another.
